Spatial Analysis & Modeling

We use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and modeling to visualize, analyze and quantify relationships between habitat structures and biotic communities in entire river sections, spatially and temporally. Based on surface models or point clouds, we assess and visualize habitat changes or bedload dynamics in 3D and quantitatively. In combination with numerical models, we can simulate changes in discharge conditions, habitat connectivity or bedload transport and the associated ecosystem changes. This allows a holistic ecosystem view, and to evaluate and predict the effects of various measures.

Our services in Detail

2D Spatial Analysis

We use RTK-GPS supported field mapping with commercial and open source GIS (ArcGIS Pro and QGIS). We also integrate third-party data into GIS or derive information from historical aerial imagery or maps. This enables us to effectively and holistically assess and analyze numerous ecosystem indicators.

3D Spatial analysis

We process 3D point clouds or surface models from our own drone and Acoustic Doppler data as well as from external sources such as LiDAR images etc. Depending on the complexity of the data, we consult other experts.  We use the results to quantify habitat changes and bedload dynamics or measure bedload additions.

Ecosystem Modeling

We analyze and model the relationships between changes in ecosystem structures and the biotic communities using statistical methods.  This creates a basis for assessing the status of a watercourse and for forecasting, planning and implementing measures and monitoring their effectiveness.

Numerical Modeling

We simulate hydraulic and discharge conditions as well as bedload transport with the BASEMENT software. The models are based on our own field surveys and remote sensing data. If necessary, other experts are consulted. This enables us to better predict and evaluate the effects of measures.
