Impact monitoring of restoration – Canton of Bern

Impact monitoring (WiKo) proofs whether watercourse restoration brings the expected structural and ecological improvements. In the Canton of Bern (2021-2023), Hunziker Betatech AG led the WiKo on 11 watercourse sections. eQcharta as deputy project manager was responsible for processing the indicator sets habitat diversity and dynamics as well as temperature in different watercourse sections and for special recordings such as the spatial temperature variation with drone-based thermal infrared on the Emme and the spatial recording of depth and flow velocity distributions in the Aare with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers.

Product

eQcharta GmbH investigated the indicator sets habitat diversity, habitat dynamics and temperature different watercourse sections respectively. With drones, high-resolution orthophotos, aerial photographs and videos of six watercourse sections were created. Brief reports on data collection and evaluation were compiled for three watercourse sections. In addition to the in-situ temperature measurements, thermal infrared drone images were taken along 1 km of the Emme to identify and characterize significant cold and warm water areas. In addition, recordings with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler provided spatial data on the distribution of water depths and flow velocities along 1 km of the non-wadeable Aare.
