Bedload dynamics in the Wiese estuary – Canton Basel

High-resolution information on the depth conditions of the Wiese estuary near Basel was required as part of hydraulic engineering measures to estimate bedload dynamics and for modeling purposes. eQcharta GmbH carried out recordings with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) in two consecutive years. This enabled the assessment of the bathymetry and water depths and the resulting erosion and deposition patterns in high resolution.

Product

At two points in time before and after the floods, detailed recordings of the depth distribution (one measurement point per second) along several longitudinal and transverse transects were carried out with dGPS coupled ADCP mounted on a boat, including the measurement of the water level line with RTK GPS. The data was interpolated in the GIS for the entire section in order to obtain the bathymetry. In comparison with a so-called difference model, the erosion and deposition surfaces were derived to determine the bedload displacement and to calibrate and validate a bedload transport model.
